L&S Unscripted: 2020 Interns

Face masks, zoom meetings, social-distanced happy hours. The 2020 Ad Camp interns have had quite the unique first couple months at L&S. But when even a global pandemic can’t deter them from wanting to gain hands-on industry experience, we make it work.
Now that they’ve had a chance to settle in, we thought it was time to formally introduce them. From account service and coordination to design and consumer insights, they’re living and breathing the L&S outthink, outdo mantra.
Enough from me…time to let them do the talking. Say hello to our five Ad Camp interns: Annemarie, Renae, Mercedes, Angela and Kelsey.

I double-majored in Psychology and Business Administration.
What’s your position at L&S?
Account Service Intern
Why did you pick L&S for your internship?
L&S is the type of place that pushes you to be better, do more and work harder. Outthink and Outdo, am I right?
Since starting at the agency, people I now look up to have taught me more here in seven months than I learned in my entire four years of college (please don’t tell my professors). Cliché – but true.
What’s your favorite project you’ve worked on so far?
I would have to say our Great Getaways Mailer for South Dakota Tourism, not only because it was an awesome piece, but it was one of the first projects I got to be involved with from start to finish.
What did you miss most when you were stuck in quarantine?
Going out to eat — cooking every meal at home got rough, man.
What is your favorite podcast right now?
I can’t say I’m a huge podcast person, but when I do tune in, it’s probably to Self-Aware Millennial or Style Your Mind.
What is your biggest irrational fear?
Not irrational, but definitely heights.
Pancakes or waffles?
And in the morning…I’m making waffles! (If you don’t know what movie that’s from, I’m sorry but we can’t be friends.)
Truly or White Claw?
Ain’t no laws, all the way.
Flight or road trip?
Big flight girl.
Concert or camping?
Concerts 110% – you won’t catch me pitching a tent anytime soon.
Spotify or Apple Music?
Apple Music
TikTok or Instagram?
I resisted the urge to download TikTok for almost a year, but now I have to admit, it’s pretty darn entertaining.

Advertising
What’s your position at L&S?
Media Intern
Why did you pick L&S for your internship?
I looked for a place where I could gain agency experience and I’ve always admired the work done by Lawrence & Schiller. I knew it would be a great place for me to apply everything I learned at school.
What’s your favorite project you’ve worked on so far?
There are so many to choose from! I’ve loved working on media calendars and contracting media for a variety of clients. I’ve also really liked doing research, whether on a client, media tactic or something completely random. There’s a lot more that goes into the media discipline than I thought, so I’m grateful I get to touch a lot of different aspects of the job.
What did you miss most when you were stuck in quarantine?
I actually missed going to school a lot. Being a senior and having to finish college in quarantine wasn’t fun, and I wished I could’ve had those last moments at SDSU with all my friends.
What is your favorite podcast right now?
Office Ladies for all the behind the scenes recaps of The Office episodes. I started re-watching The Office again while in quarantine (as if I needed that as an excuse), so I was up to date on all the podcast episodes.
What is your biggest irrational fear?
I have a weird fear of getting stabbed in the eye.
Pancakes or waffles?
Waffles. Leslie Knope said it best, “Friends, waffles, work.” Crunchy > soggy any day.
Truly or White Claw?
White Claw. Specifically mango, but the lemonade Trulys are a close second.
Flight or road trip?
Flight. I want to get to my destination as fast as possible.
Concert or camping?
Concert. I try to get to one at least once a year.
Spotify or Apple Music?
Spotify. Just never gonna switch. Sorry, Apple — love you otherwise.
TikTok or Instagram?
Instagram. It’s the OG, and the platform I spend the most time on.

What’s your position at L&S?

L&S is the most well-known agency in the state. They work with such a wide variety of clients and I loved that they were a full-service agency so I could learn a little bit about everything.
What’s your favorite project you’ve worked on so far?
My absolute favorite thing I’ve worked on is the “Understanding Gen Zers” project. All five interns got together to create a presentation about Generation Z from Gen Zers’ perspective. We talked about the slang terms we use, what social media platforms we like best, the type of work environment we want and so on. Stay tuned for a blog coming soon!
What did you miss most when you were stuck in quarantine?
Working at the 9 Bar in Brookings and having a social life! Not seeing my college friends really put a damper on my day.
What is your favorite podcast right now?
Wasn’t a big podcast girl until this summer. I really enjoy 1,000 Life Hacks or anything about finance.
What is your biggest irrational fear?
Everything medical — but specifically needles. I am trying to overcome this fear by watching all of the gruesome scenes on Grey’s Anatomy in the hopes that it will one day go away.
Pancakes or waffles?
Don’t play around — pancakes all the way.
Truly or White Claw?
Eww, neither. Hit me with a Press!
Flight or road trip?
Flight — you can’t road trip to Europe.

Concert, BUT ONLY if it’s an EDM festival. (Rave girl all the way.)
Spotify or Apple Music?
Apple Music or you can go kick rocks.
TikTok or Instagram?
Instagram will always have my heart. No other platform can compare.

What’s your position at L&S?

Why did you pick L&S for your internship?
My prior knowledge of Lawrence & Schiller was that it was professional, successful and competitive. Those reasons put it on the top of my list. My main goal for an internship is to learn as much as I possibly can, and I knew I was going to learn and grow as a designer here.
What’s your favorite project you’ve worked on so far?
I can’t decide on just one. I loved working on South Dakota Tourism billboards since I am a travel/adrenaline junkie. Plus, I enjoyed being able to promote tourism in my home state. Another one of my favorite projects I got to jump on was designing a potential logo for the SEIKO Sunset Skins Game. It was fun utilizing my knowledge in Illustrator.

The climbing wall. Sushi. Seeing dogs in public. Hanging out on campus.

What was/is your major?
I’m double majoring in Marketing and Operational Analytics.

Why did you pick L&S for your internship?
I was very interested in analytics, and this was the first analytics/research-based internship I could find that didn’t require me to know program coding. Also, L&S has a very prestigious reputation, so I knew if I received an offer, it would be an amazing experience.
What’s your favorite project you’ve worked on so far?
I’ve been able to conduct a research project from start to finish, which has been both exhilarating and exhausting all in one. I’ve conducted numerous interviews and created a survey that I’m currently analyzing and will ultimately be presenting on!
What did you miss most when you were stuck in quarantine?
Going out to eat. I am a huge foodie, and although I loved creating new recipes at home, it didn’t take long before I was craving several of my favorite restaurants.
What is your favorite podcast right now?
I have a few, but my all-time favorite is What We Said. I especially love their storytime episodes where viewers write in with their craziest stories. They cover a wide variety of topics, so I never know if I’ll be crying, laughing hysterically or becoming more intelligent when a new episode is released.
What is your biggest irrational fear?
Bats. I know some people find them cute, but they absolutely terrify me.
Pancakes or waffles?
Pancakes, without a doubt.
