We present to you, the 2022 L&S Ad Camp Interns. This rag-tag team of marketing enthusiasts entered our doors in May, starting what I’m sure they now consider the best summer of their lives. But, since I can’t speak for all of them, we invited them to interview each other and find out how this internship has actually been. From coffee preferences to lessons learned, check out what our campers had to say.

WHAT COLLEGE DID/DO YOU GO TO AND WHAT WAS YOUR MAJOR?
I majored in Media & Journalism at the University of South Dakota. Go Yotes!
WHAT’S YOUR POSITION AT L&S?
Digital Intern.
DESCRIBE AD CAMP IN THREE WORDS.
Entertaining. Hardworking. AMAZING.
WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU ABOUT THE L&S INTERNSHIP?
The independence and the trust that they have in you to get your work done and get it done well. Another thing that surprised me was how welcoming everyone is. Right from the get-go they make you feel like you’re an important part of the team.
HOT COFFEE OR ICED COFFEE?
Iced coffee in the spring and summer. Hot coffee in the fall and winter. Best of both worlds.

WHAT COLLEGE DID/DO YOU GO TO AND WHAT WAS YOUR MAJOR?
I majored in Graphic Design at South Dakota State University.
WHAT’S YOUR POSITION AT L&S?
Graphic Design Intern.
WHY DID YOU PICK L&S?
I knew that L&S would give me good real-life agency experience with the opportunity to work on real projects with a variety of clients, and that really excited me!
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE CLIENT/PROJECT TO WORK ON SO FAR?
The South Dakota Office of Highway Safety has been my favorite client. I get to create fun and unique social media posts; like turning Jim Reaper into Thor God of Love and Thunder — or photoshopping wildebeests and geese onto motorcycles.
WOULD YOU RATHER BATTLE A CAT-SIZED GORILLA OR A TIGER-SIZED BADGER?
I would rather fight a cat-sized gorilla because it’s basically an angry toddler.

WHAT COLLEGE DID/DO YOU GO TO AND WHAT WAS YOUR MAJOR?
I majored in Communications at the University of West Florida.
WHAT’S YOUR POSITION AT L&S?
Account Service Intern.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED AT AD CAMP THAT YOU DIDN’T EXPECT TO?
I didn’t expect to learn a little bit of everything. I thought I’d just come here and be in account service, but I’ve learned how broadcast works when we’re on shoots or seeing a designer work on a project start to finish.
WHAT SUPERPOWER WOULD HELP YOU MOST IN YOUR DISCIPLINE?
Mindreading would be interesting, that way I’d know everything my client wants and always understand exactly what they mean.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CHILDHOOD CARTOON?
Phineas and Ferb. It’s so funny and has parts of it that are intelligent in a funny way.
SHAWN KUHNEL
WHAT COLLEGE DID/DO YOU GO TO AND WHAT WAS YOUR MAJOR?
I majored in Media & Journalism at the University of South Dakota.
WHAT’S YOUR POSITION AT L&S?
Broadcast and Copywriting Intern. A self-proclaimed “unstoppable force of nature” at L&S.
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT DISCIPLINE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I’d love to be a designer. I love what they do but can’t even begin to figure out how I would start. It seems so fun because you get to build things from nothing.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO TAKE AWAY FROM AD CAMP?
A job. But really, one thing I’ve noticed is I feel like I have imposter syndrome about the work that I do but working at L&S has shown me that this work is attainable for me. L&S has given me confidence in my work that I didn’t have before.
WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE A RIFF-OFF WITH SCOTT LAWRENCE OR A SKATE-OFF WITH MASON HORACEK?
I’d love to have a skate-off with Mason one day. I’m horrible at skateboarding but if I could learn from Mason, that would be awesome. Have you seen his Instagram?
